Legionella Detected in West London Primary School

A national newspaper recently published a story relating to the discovery of legionella in a West London Primary School. Legionella was detected following the schools routine water management obligations in compliance with Health and safety legislation. The incident demonstrates how essential it is to ensure water systems are managed in public spaces in compliance with legislation.

The incident raised concerns with many parents due to the health risk that exposure to legionella posed to their children. In this case immediate action was taken, with the affected water supply turned off and the water treated. Thankfully students nor teachers have reported sickness that relates to legionella following its discovery.

The legionella bacteria can be found in freshwater environments and becomes a serious health concern if the bacteria multiplies and spreads in domestic water systems, such as faucets, hot water tanks, showers, and plumbing systems. Exposure to legionella can cause legionnaires disease, where the individual will require a course of antibiotics for treatment and in some instances must be treated in hospital.
