HSE’s Duty to Manage Asbestos Campaign

The HSE have recently launched the ‘Asbestos – Your Duty’ campaign, intended to highlight the risk that asbestos poses in buildings whilst raising awareness of the legal duty individuals have to manage these risks.

Asbestos wasn’t banned completely until 1999, meaning any buildings that were built prior to this are at risk of containing asbestos. Whilst asbestos is only a danger when disrupted or disturbed, all risk is completely eliminated when it is properly managed.

The ‘Asbestos – Your Duty’ campaign is targeted at those responsible for this proper management as asbestos, also known as the dutyholders.

Who is the dutyholder?

This may be the building owner, business owner, landlord of the premises or person with the clear responsibility for the building’s maintenance/ repair.

This ensures that anyone on the premises, whether it be workers or building users, aren’t at risk of exposure, applying to a variety of non-domestic buildings such as schools, hospitals, offices and shops, even communal parts of flats/shared accommodation.

The HSE have a variety of resources to help you discern whether you have a duty to manage asbestos, what this duty entails and how to ensure the safety and compliance of all buildings here.
