The kids are back to school and so are the HSE!

From September 2022 onwards the HSE will be conducting a programme of inspections of Primary and Secondary schools across England, Scotland and Wales to assess how the schools are managing the risks from asbestos within their sites. All schools are required to manage their asbestos containing materials under the ‘duty to manage’ requirements within Regulation 4 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

The visits will be undertaken by HSE inspectors who will need to speak to a representative of the school who has knowledge of how the asbestos is managed within the school site, they may also request certain documentation prior to the visit, for example the asbestos register and management plan.

To prepare for a visit by the HSE inspectors’ schools should review their current documentation and make sure they are up to date with their re-inspections to ensure they are meeting their duties under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.
