Casa Environmental Services recently undertook a Part 1 Inventory of Hazardous Materials survey to the Epic St Croix vessel which was undergoing a refit in dry dock in Lisbon, Portugal.

The survey was undertaken at short notice as the ship was due to sail within 4 days of the order for the survey being placed.

Casa sent a team of two surveyors to Lisbon within 24 hours to carry out the work and they started the survey immediately after induction by the Project Manager on board.

The project was completed on time within 2 days with the vessel due to leave port the day after completion.

The Epic St Croix is a 5000 Tonne Bulk LPG Tanker built in Japan in 2014. The Epic St Croix sails under a Maltese Flag with its home port being Valletta.

An IHM Part 1 survey seeks to identify and quantify any, and all hazardous materials that may exist on board a vessel in order that the owner may safely manage them.

Hazardous materials can include PCB’s, Asbestos, Heavy Metals , Radioactive Substances and Explosives amongst others. When a ship reaches the end of its working life and is due to be broken and recycled an IHM Part 2 and 3 survey is undertaken which are more intrusive than a Part 1 Survey.

The IHM Part 1 Survey was undertaken in compliance with the following Regulation Guidelines :

  • Ship Recycling Regulation SRR (EU) 1257/2013.
  • Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships 2009 (HKC).
  • European Maritime Safety Agency – Best Practice Guidance on IHM.
  • Resolution MEPC 269(68) adopted 15th May 2015 – Guidelines for the development of IHM.
  • Class NK – Guidelines for the Inventory of Hazardous Materials, October 2015. Ver 3.00.

The Epic St Croix departed on schedule on Monday 8th of April.
