ACMs

Asbestos Containing Materials. Any material containing asbestos.

ACOP

Approved Code of Practice. Generally, our works relate to the ACOP CAR2012 or L143.

AIB

Asbestos Insulating Board.

Airlock

A three stage construction with separate areas for transiting in and out of the enclosure.

Amosite

Brown asbestos.

AMP

Asbestos Management Plan.

ASB5

The name of the form completed by LARCs when notifying the HSE of their intention to remove notifiable asbestos.

Baglock

A three stage construction for removing asbestos waste out of the enclosure.

Bulk sample

Industry term for a sample of asbestos.

CAR

Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

CfR

Certificate for Reoccupation.

Chrysotile

White asbestos.

Control limit

0.1 asbestos fibres per cubic centimetre of air (0.1 f/cm3) (averaged over a four-hour period)

Control measures

Actions applied to reduce the spread of asbestos.

Crocidolite

Blue asbestos.

DCU

Decontamination Unit. Usually towed to site, a small mobile shower unit for decontamination following asbestos removal.

Enclosure

An airtight enclosure usually constructed of 1000-gauge polythene to contain all asbestos fibre and debris during removal.

HSE

Health and Safety Executive. The governing body who control asbestos licensing and approve asbestos removal.

LARC

Licensed Asbestos Removal Contractor.

Licensable work

Asbestos removal that will create respirable fibre concentrations over the control limit.

NNLW

Notifiable Non-Licensed Work.

Notification period

The 14 day stand still period from when the LARC notifies the HSE of asbestos removal and the date at which the works can start.

NPUs

Negative Pressure Units.

PPE

Personal Protective Equipment.

PM

Project Manager.

RAMS

Risk Assessment and Method Statement.

RPE

Respiratory Protective Equipment.
