Asbestos Survey

Our Head Office recently had a fantastic opportunity to survey a piece of history when three of our surveyors stepped back in time to conduct an interesting survey on a purpose-built bomb shelter from World War I.

Due to the nature of the structure, we had to conduct the survey under confined space conditions, with the Outside Operative working on the outside of the structure, whilst our surveyors conducted the survey from inside the bomb shelter. They were in communication at all times, using intrinsically safe two-way radios.

The surveyors inside the structure carried escape sets and a gas detector with them. Lighting was already provided for us inside the access tunnel and the shelter. In order to conduct the survey safely, we had to vent and purge the air within the bomb shelter prior to entering.

One surveyor said: “It was like stepping back in time! I couldn’t imagine what it would have been like entering the shelter using only gas lights and candles with the sound of bombs dropping in the surrounding area.”

Recently, the bomb shelter has been used as a service tunnel for items such as house electrical cables. As a result, our surveyors were tasked with the meticulous process of looking for evidence of old pipe runs containing insulation, residue on walls and debris on the floor.

After a thorough inspection, the surveyors identified no asbestos containing materials within the shelter. This was certainly a survey we don’t get to carry out every day!
