Waste Wood Sampling, Testing & Classification UK
Hazardous Waste Wood Analysis & Removal
Casa Environmental Services is proud to offer a comprehensive sampling, analysis and consultancy service for potentially hazardous wood waste across the UK.
All analysis is undertaken in UKAS Accredited Laboratories accredited to ISO 17025, enabling our clients to ensure they fully comply with the latest Wood Recyclers Association (WRA) Guidance.
Meeting Waste Wood Regulations
Waste wood removed from demolition and refurbishment activities requires suitable testing and classification in order to be disposed of in compliance with the guidance from the Wood Recycling Association. This guidance requires that any waste wood must be correctly identified, segregated and consigned as hazardous where applicable. Once the wood has been correctly classified through sampling and analysis, it must be removed in accordance with the guidance from the WRA.
Casa Environmental Services can help to make sure your waste wood segregation, testing and disposal process is in line with the latest guidance.
Why Test Waste Wood?
There are numerous benefits to testing waste wood for disposal rather than automatically declaring it as hazardous. Hazardous wood waste is more costly to dispose of than safe, tested wood or wood that has been classified and therefore disposed of in the appropriate way.
As operators are responsible for correctly characterising waste materials generated by their activities, any wood that is incorrectly classified and sent to a waste transfer station/inappropriately disposed of could mean you’re liable to fines.
What Waste Wood is Hazardous?
Unless analysed and tested to prove otherwise, waste wood from the demolition or refurbishment of buildings constructed before 2007 will be classified as hazardous waste.
Some items from pre-2007 buildings require testing before disposal include:
- External fascia
- External doors
- Tiling cladding
- Timber joists
- Timber frames
- Barge boards
- Tiling battens
- Roof timbers
- Soffit boards
- External joinery
These items cannot be taken to wood recycling centres and instead must be specially disposed of (unless a test has proven that they are not hazardous).
Other pieces of wood that have been treated with chemicals contaminated by other hazardous materials are likely to be deemed as hazardous waste and must be dealt with appropriately. Wood that is disposed of in an unsuitable manner can lead to expensive fines so it’s important that all waste wood is tested before it is disposed of.
At Casa Environmental Services, we can provide you with a complete testing service and compile our findings into a report to inform you if they are hazardous.
Our Waste Wood Sampling & Testing Process
Our wood sampling and testing process generally involves 5 steps.
Wood Sampling
Our skilled technicians collect samples from your potentially hazardous wood products which are transferred to UKAS accredited laboratories for analysis.
Wood Analysis
Our wood testing experts analyse the wood by milling and homogenising samples to a <63 micron particle size. Moisture content is recorded and samples are categorised ready for the recording process.
Wood Recording
All sorted waste wood material is weighed and recorded to produce a report on the composition of your sample. We will provide you with a lab certificate so that you can correctly characterise your waste.
Wood Reporting
You will be issued with an interpretive report to characterise the material as either hazardous or non-hazardous and supply the appropriate waste code.
