It is a legal requirement that individuals using tight-fitting respiratory protective equipment (including disposable dust masks) have a satisfactory face fit test certificate, as per HSG53: Respiratory protective equipment at work. RPE should always be the last line of defence after all other reasonably practicable measures have been implemented to prevent or control exposure to hazardous substances. If your risk assessment has determined that RPE will be necessary for a task, and that tight-fitting masks are to be used, then the employer should ensure the correct size of RPE has been selected and confirmed as suitable with a face fit test.

Casa are able to provide testers accredited by Fit2Fit (a scheme designed by the British Safety Industry Federation). The Health and Safety Executive state the following regarding Fit2Fit:

Following this scheme is not compulsory, and employers are free to take any other action to comply with the law. But if you follow this scheme, you will be doing enough to demonstrate good practice.

HSE guidance also states “if RPE is used frequently it is good practice to ensure repeat fit testing is carried out on a regular basis”. If there are any changes to a person’s face through, for example, weight loss/gain, scars etc, then a repeat fit test will also be necessary. You don’t need to have had a fit test with Casa before to book in a repeat test!

Our equipment is portable, so we can carry out the face fit testing at a venue of your choice. We carry out Quantitive fit test assessments, meaning your certificate will indicate a numerical measure of how well the facepiece seals against the wearer’s face, called a Fit Factor. We can fit test for either full face or half face RPE.

Someone undertaking accredited face fit testing

What does an accredited face fit test involve?

  • An explanation from the fit tester on the purpose of the fit test, what is required, and the meaning of the fit test results. Note: the wearer should refrain from smoking (including e-cigarettes) for at least 60 minutes before the fit test, and the wearer must be clean-shaven where the facepiece will contact the wearer’s skin
  • The wearer dons the test mask, which is rigged up to the particle counting system
  • The wearer undertakes a series of no more than 7 basic ‘exercises’, designed to replicate normal work tasks and communication while wearing the RPE
  • The particle counting system will calculate an average Fit Factor based on the results for each exercise, resulting in either a pass or fail based on established acceptable thresholds
  • The fit tester will produce a unique certificate indicating the overall Fit Factor
