Meet Our Devon & Cornwall Branch Surveyor: Chris Brenton
This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Chris Brenton, one of our dedicated surveyors working across our Devon and Cornwall branch. Chris brings a wealth of experience from both the construction and engineering industries, and his journey into asbestos surveying is as inspiring as it is unique.
What are the best parts of your role?
“For me, it’s the variety. Every day is different – the buildings, the people, and the challenges we encounter. It keeps the job fresh and exciting. You’re never just looking in the same places or finding the same uses for ACMs. There’s always something new to learn, and that helps maintain focus. I’ve discovered asbestos in places I never would have expected, which keeps me constantly on my toes.”
What advice would you give someone interested in joining the industry?
“Go for it. This can be a very rewarding career choice if you apply yourself with the right mindset. It won’t be an easy ride, but if you’ve got a strong work ethic, the world really is your oyster.”
What made you choose a career as an asbestos surveyor?
“I’d been considering this move for quite a while. I’d spent many years in the construction industry before moving into a systems engineer role, working on television and Wi-Fi reception systems for multiple dwelling buildings. But with the rise of streaming services, that industry was beginning to fade. Just as my time there was winding down, CASA advertised for a trainee surveyor – and the rest, as they say, is history.”
What are your favourite types of jobs?
“Working in Devon and Cornwall, we tend to see more commercial buildings. These projects are often larger in scale and come with a wider variety of asbestos uses. While they can be more pressurised, I actually enjoy that environment. I thrive in situations that are more complex or demanding.”
Have you always lived in the area?
“I’m Cornish born and bred. I’ve lived all across Cornwall and a few places in Devon too. I’ve also had short-term work in Bristol and Portsmouth on contracts, but for me, Cornwall will always be home.”
Chris’s passion for the role, combined with his adaptability and problem-solving skills, makes him a key part of our Devon and Cornwall team. His journey is a great example of how diverse career paths can lead into the asbestos surveying industry – and how rewarding it can be once you get there.
