The HSE has recently released its annual statistics on work-related ill health and workplace injuries, which shed light on some alarming figures.

It was shown that the number of workers reported to be suffering from work related ill health Is 1.7 million, which is a similar number to the previous year (2022/2023).

The HSE also reported 2,257 mesothelioma deaths due to past asbestos exposures (2022 figure).

These contributing factors have led to 33.7 million working days lost due to work related illness or workplace injury, which has equated to 21.6 billion estimate cost of injuries and ill health form current working conditions.

What does this mean?

Sadly, the majority of illnesses and instances of ill-health sustained at work are avoidable. Mesothelioma, the cancer caused by asbestos exposure, is completely preventable if the correct measures are taken to eliminate risk of exposure.

The symptoms of Mesothelioma can take anywhere between 20-60 years to develop, with more than 2,700 people being diagnosed each year.
