How to Help Prevent Legionnaires’ Disease This Spring

As we move into the spring months, it’s important to stay mindful of the risk posed by waterborne bacteria, such as Legionella. Legionnaires’ disease, which is caused by inhaling water droplets contaminated with active Legionella bacteria, is a potentially fatal lung infection.

Cases of Legionnaires’ disease are widely underreported. Despite this, it is estimated that there are between 4,000 and 6,000 cases in the UK each year. Spring provides the perfect environment for bacterial growth — with warmer temperatures, elevated humidity, and increased rainfall — combined with water systems that may have seen reduced use or been turned off completely during the winter months. This can lead to stagnant water, which is the ideal breeding ground for Legionella. The bacteria can be found in a range of places, such as taps, showers, air conditioning units, pools, and hot tubs.
Heading into spring, it’s worth checking air conditioning units in places like offices, hotels, or care homes. If they haven’t been used over the winter and aren’t maintained properly, there’s a chance they could release water droplets that may contain Legionella.

Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, businesses have a legal responsibility to identify and manage potential health hazards — including the risk of Legionella. Compliance with this legislation is essential to ensure a safe environment for employees and visitors.
