Historic England’s New Guide for Transforming Historic Buildings into Housing

Historic England has recently published guidance for SME Developers on how to turn old buildings into flats. This scheme, named Heritage for Housing, has been designed to tackle the National Housing Shortage, through providing SME Developers with clear guidance on repurposing historic buildings for residency.

According to them, up to 670,000 homes could be created through repurposing existing historic buildings in England. Part of this initiative is providing a step-by-step process for all stages of the process.

This includes providing advice on feasibility testing, stakeholder engagement, heritage appraisal, design development, building consent and ongoing maintenance.

Duncan Wilson, Historic England Chief Executive said “The report demonstrates how historic buildings can be part of the solution to the housing crisis. It is a timely and useful guide for developers who want to adapt historic buildings for new housing.”

Don’t forget that if you are refurbishing a property that was built prior to 1999, then you will require an asbestos survey to ensure the safety of these SME Developers conducting the works, as well as your compliance to regulations.

Casa can provide an end-to-end service for all asbestos requirements, from surveying to project management over removals. Get in touch here.
