Asbestos Refurbishment Surveys

Location:

South East England

Our Hampshire branch was recently engaged by a government-owned organisation responsible for managing healthcare facilities across England. We were appointed to carry out a series of Asbestos Refurbishment Surveys at a regional hospital in the South East, ahead of planned fire compartmentation works in one of the main buildings—a nine-storey wing with significant public access.

The hospital in question has a long-standing architectural and operational history, with its initial construction dating back to the late 1950s. Subsequent extensions were completed over several decades. Given that asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) were widely used in construction up until the UK ban in 1999, it is essential that thorough asbestos surveys are completed before any refurbishment or invasive work is undertaken—particularly in legacy buildings of this kind.

The surveys carried out by Casa play a critical role in safeguarding both on-site contractors and healthcare staff. By identifying any ACMs that could be disturbed during construction, we enable safe removal or appropriate management prior to works commencing.

Through this work, the client is fulfilling its legal duties under the HSE’s Duty to Manage asbestos regulations, which require property managers of non-domestic premises to assess, manage, and mitigate asbestos risk—especially during refurbishment.

Once commended by an architectural historian as a standout example of civic design in the area, this hospital continues to provide essential services to the community, including cancer treatment, paediatrics, inpatient care, and urgent walk-in support.

Our involvement ensures both safety and regulatory compliance, while also supporting the continued function and legacy of a key healthcare facility. We look forward to continuing our partnership on future asbestos-related projects.
