Meet Alistair Williamson, Manager of Casa Environmental Services’ Plymouth Office

As Plymouth Branch and Consultancy Manager, Alistair Williamson runs CASA’s Consultancy department, as well as overseeing the day-to-day operations of Casa’s Devon and Cornwall Branch.

Alistair has been working in the asbestos industry for over 21 years, is a fully qualified Surveyor & Analyst and has a solid and extensive background in various commercial and technical aspects of the industry. Alistair joined Casa in 2021, and in September of 2024, became manager of our Plymouth office.

Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (CAR 2012) was introduced in April 2012 by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to help reduce the number of deaths caused from asbestos exposure and related diseases. They set out the framework for controlling exposure to asbestos, including Regulation 4 which covers managing asbestos in non-domestic premises (this includes ‘common’ areas of certain domestic premises; like a stairwell or communal landing area in a block of flats, for example). 

The Duty to Manage asbestos is directed at those who manage or are responsible for maintenance and repairs in a non-domestic building. It is their responsibility to make sure the risk of asbestos is managed safely. 

Various other sections of CAR 2012 stipulate identification of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) and undertaking risk assessments ahead of carrying out any construction, demolition, or maintenance work that may disturb ACMs.
