Asbestos Found in Children’s Play Sand Sold in UK – Product Withdrawn Amid Safety Concern

Craft retailer Hobbycraft has withdrawn bottles of children’s play sand from sale after asbestos fibres were allegedly found in the product following independent laboratory testing. The discovery, made by a customer who sent samples of coloured sand for analysis, has prompted safety warnings and highlighted the importance of product testing and hazard awareness.

What Happened?

  • The sand was believed to have been sold as part of a “Giant Box of Craft” arts kit at Hobbycraft stores across the UK.
  • Laboratory tests detected fibrous tremolite asbestos in at least three colours included in the kit.
  • As a precaution, Hobbycraft has voluntarily removed the products from shelves while further independent testing is carried out.

Although experts quoted in reporting suggest the immediate health risk is likely low, asbestos is a known carcinogen with long-term health effects if fibres are inhaled. The finding follows similar incidents overseas where imported play sand products triggered recalls, extensive testing and even temporary closures of schools and childcare facilities.

Why This Matters

This incident serves as a reminder that asbestos is not confined to buildings alone. It can be present in imported materials, soils and mineral-based products, sometimes unintentionally.

Effective asbestos management in the consumer market relies on:

  • Early identification through competent sampling and laboratory analysis
  • Understanding material origin and composition, particularly for imported goods
  • Swift action when potential risks are identified

Under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, dutyholders must take reasonable steps to identify asbestos-containing materials and prevent exposure where asbestos could be present. Equally, responsibility falls to manufacturers and suppliers under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 and UK REACH to ensure that products sold in the UK market have been risk-assessed and prohibited substances are not used within their construction.

Managing Risk Through Information and Testing

Whether dealing with construction materials, soils, legacy products or buildings, having accurate asbestos information is essential. Suitable surveys, sampling and analysis help organisations make informed decisions and avoid unnecessary exposure.

If you are responsible for managing buildings, materials or refurbishment projects, now is a good time to consider whether asbestos risks have been properly assessed.
