Asbestos Exposure at School
A recent incident at a UK primary school has brought attention to the serious risks associated with improper work with asbestos containing materials during building refurbishments.
During kitchen renovations in the school, asbestos insulating board panels were disturbed by a site supervisor who failed to follow safety procedures. This caused airborne asbestos fibres to spread throughout the school hall, which then remained in use by pupils and staff for two days before the risk was identified.
A HSE investigation found that although asbestos awareness training had been provided, clear instructions to avoid disturbing the area were ignored. The wall containing asbestos was scheduled for inspection by a licensed contractor. This however was not carried out, resulting in unnecessary exposure.
The site supervisor was prosecuted and fined for breaching health and safety legislation.
This incident serves as a poignant reminder of how absolutely essential it is to follow the correct Asbestos Management procedures. With proper management and professional services, no one should ever be at risk of asbestos exposure.
